Harp 2 Ewe is the 'brain child' of Carole Miller BA Music Performance RSAMD, MA Music Psychology Sheffield. Carole trained as a classical flautist at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama a long time ago, but felt drawn from an early age by the Scottish Harp or Clàrsach as they have become known. (Clàrsachs are really the wire strung harp of the Highlands where as the gut lever harp was really the Lowland Harp - but let's not get into that argument! J) Having made the decision at age 36, that life was too short and to kick herself up the 'bahooky' (Scottish backside! J) and get a harp, she started lessons with early music specialist, Bill Taylor who is still her mentor. She has also been greatly influenced by the teachings of Wendy Stewart, Karen Marshalsay, Corrina Hewat, Ailie Robertson and Alison Kinnaird and attends their workshops when she can.
Carole has always had good access to excellent teachers but she is aware that sadly this is not always the case for everyone. Especially with an aural tradition, it can be jolly hard to find people to share their knowledge on a regular basis - especially in rural areas. Having previously run courses in Gaelic Music and Instrumental Workshops and then having moved to Wester Ross in early 2006, she decided that despite the various Feisean, learners, especially those of a certain standard, were not adequately catered for and hence 'Harp 2 Ewe' and their musical courses in one of the most beautiful parts of the world. There are many fantastic harp courses out there (see the links page) but as one Harper on our very first course said - there is always room for more!!
The philosophy behind 'Harp 2 Ewe' is simple - good teaching with excellent tutors, preserving and carrying on the tradition in pleasant surroundings with excellent food to sustain the sessions, giving opportunities to play and learn in a safe environment. (Carole possesses both Disclosure Scotland and Enhanced Disclosure Certificates and ensures the tutors she invites to teach are equally aware.) Music is supposed to be fun and learning should be too. Hard work, good humour, good food and good music - what more could you ask for?
